Next up is a comparison of the Canon Eos f1.8 50mm original version with the metal mount and an Industar f3.5 50mm. The Russian made Industar is the ‘pancake’ version; it protrudes a maximum of 28mm and a minimum of 23mm (including the m42 to EOS focus confirming adapter) from the camera lens mount and is only 44mm wide. The serial number indicates it was made in 1971.
The shots are directly into the Western Winter sky with obvious cloud cover. There obviously is a difference in the apparent width of the captured images. This has not been adjusted. The only adjustment made was to load both into Photoshop and change the horizontal width to 1000 pixels. Both lenses are clearly marked 50mm, which is ‘correct’ is not something I will get into.
The shots were handheld, spur of the moment style. Using the Canon XTi’s Av mode, both lenses are at f8 and the exposure 1/500 sec.
The Industar today is selling for $24.90USD including S&H from Russia; the Canon for ~$175USD plus S&H. The choice is yours for a 50mm prime lens.
The top image is from the Industar.
