Some 50mm Comparisons Part Two

Next up is a comparison of the Canon Eos f1.8 50mm original version with the metal mount and an Industar f3.5 50mm. The Russian made Industar is the ‘pancake’ version; it protrudes a maximum of 28mm and a minimum of 23mm (including the m42 to EOS focus confirming adapter) from the camera lens mount and is only 44mm wide. The serial number indicates it was made in 1971.

The shots are directly into the Western Winter sky with obvious cloud cover. There obviously is a difference in the apparent width of the captured images. This has not been adjusted. The only adjustment made was to load both into Photoshop and change the horizontal width to 1000 pixels. Both lenses are clearly marked 50mm, which is ‘correct’ is not something I will get into.

The shots were handheld, spur of the moment style. Using the Canon XTi’s Av mode, both lenses are at f8 and the exposure 1/500 sec.

The Industar today is selling for $24.90USD including S&H from Russia; the Canon for ~$175USD plus S&H. The choice is yours for a 50mm prime lens.

Some 50mm Comparisons Part One

Here are two pictures taken this morning. There are actually two comparisons to be made here. (1) 1.4 vs 1.8 (2) cheap vs moderate/expensive.

The first picture was taken with my Canon XTi with a film era Sears M42 mount 50mm 1.4 lens (the equivalent can be purchased on eBay today for $54-58) mounted via an auto focus confirming adapter for M42 to EOS mount (today on eBay for $28.95 free S&H) making it the physical equivalent of the Canon 1.4 50mm EF ( ~$360 on eBay today from several dealers); the second picture was taken with the Canon 1.8 50mm EF original version with metal mount ($189 on eBay today).

I took the one with the 1.8 first with manual focus and set it via the focus LED in the viewfinder and noted the auto settings chosen by the camera of f16 at 1/500 sec; then I set the camera to TV mode and set the exposure to 1/500 and manually set the Sears lens to f16 and manually set the focus with the focus LED in the viewfinder. Both were taken about 2 minutes apart and the Sun was clear for both shots.

Then I simply adjusted the size to 1024 pixels horiz in Photoshop for both pictures with no other adjustments.

Note: I originally did this post about 3 weeks ago and forgot to publish it, explaining the difference in the Canon 50mm price.
